Tribe 8 takes punk dyke rhythm on the road again

'Castrating bitches unite' is their rallying cry, and 'Don't leave a stump, it can be re-attached'!"

This is how San Francisco queer-girl punk band Tribe 8 describes their "personal-is-political coup" touring style as they hit the road with their latest album, Role Models for Amerika:

“Leading armies of snarling death bitches to swarm the globe, they left in their wake satisfied women, severely bleeding rapists, and drag queens to rule the jubilant

"Our performances are an invitation to yell, scream, and go wild.”

masses. Their next mission is to drive the Christian Right and the corporate elite into bomb shelters to escape Tribe 8's incessant punk rock assault blasting from PA systems everywhere."

Tribe 8 has a sexy bitchiness that isn't for everyone, but they have a loyal following. The band is not afraid to risk offending. Their songs include plenty of violent imagery and delve into taboo topics like suicide, bestiality, and rape. Band members will strip off their shirts and perform topless when the stage lights get hot. Their style is no easy listening either, with a harsh vocal sound and pounding instrumentals. It's a cathartic sound for queers sick of oppression.

"Our performances are an invitation to yell, scream, and go wild," lead singer Lynn Breedlove told the New York Blade, a gay and lesbian weekly. "I have lots of anger. Punk rock is a medium for expressing that rage."

Role Models for Amerika has a mix of songs covering a range of subjects. The Tribe has a song laced with sarcasm about a dyke with breast cancer, called “Ta ta, ta-

tas." There's a bluesy piece called “Junkyard Dog."

"Prison Blues" is a narrative of a woman in prison for welfare fraud who ironically notes that while there were no jobs for her on the outside, there are plenty of jobs in the big house. The liner notes tell that more than 60% of women in prison are first-time, non-violent offenders: "Remember always that prisons are a true reflection of our society. If you are not a part of a movement for positive chance then you just have to take what they give you."

Another song deals with gay youth suicide ("What the Papers Didn't Say"). A gentle reggae-style "Queen of the Scene" pays a tribute to a woman who doesn't appreciate her own qualities. A fast-paced "Rise Above" is an optimistic message of defiance in the face of oppression.

Tribe 8's stridently political lyrics include plenty of tongue-in-cheek humor. During "Castration Song #22," the band stages a mock castration, shouting "Lorena don't take no shit!" This part of the show tends to intimidate some male audience members, but the band members say that isn't their intention.

"All you have to do is have common sense and detach your personal self from it,” band member Flipper told Bay Area Music. "This is theater, and this is a response to a really fucked-up situation in the world, and here's a moment in life where somebody's addressing that with humor and energy and talent and music." ♡

Tribe 8 will perform in Cleveland November 9 at 11:30 pm at Euclid Tavern, 11629 Euclid Ave., 216-229-7788. They will be in Pittsburgh November 16 at 11 pm at the Millvale Industrial Theater on Route 28, 412-321-6488. On November 18 they will perform in Columbus at 10 pm at Little Brothers, 1100 N.
